This week I am doing a reading of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" where we read some of the history involved in the book and the first chapter. We then go on to meet some friends, witness some odd sea critters and a walk through my little town!

The blue sea critters are the Velella Velella or "by-the-wind sailors". These creatures are not jellyfish but are related to them, featuring a sail-like fin that helps them drift with the wind. They are typically harmless to humans, though they do have stinging cells on their tentacles, which are harmless when the creatures are on the beach. Turns out, recently they have washing up on the shores of the Pacific for the last couple of weeks (a sure sign I need to get out more!). This apparently happens every few years but this year they are saying that it is in the record breaking numbers. One should wonder why, I would think. The official story is “linked to warmer sea surface temperatures and strong winds” which could be true to some degree but the Global Warming angle always gets me suspicious that the actual cause to such a thing (especially to what looks like a mass die-off).
